July 1st TED Talk – Have the balls to follow your dreams

TED_Talks_Roanoke_2015-07-01

This Wednesday at noon, join us for weekly TED Talks at 16 West!

After four years of working behind a desk, she started to get that uncomfortable feeling in the pit of her stomach, the kind you get when you know you’re not supposed to be where you are. She wondered, “Is this what I’m going to do for the rest of my life?” On her journey to answer one of life’s biggest questions, she comes across a red ball, and from then on her life was never the same.

Predisposed with a set of cultural, religious and societal expectations, having the ‘balls’ to challenge these expectations has been Dianna David’s triumph over the past decade. Being inspired by the art of play opened up the doors to seeing infinite possibilities of a life she has always desired to live. As a Transformational Entertainer, Motivational Speaker, facilitator for empowerment workshops, kid whisper, humanitarian, freestyle dancer, and human being, she travels the world inspiring people of all ages to live a life of passion and purpose.

June 24th TED Talk – The Forest Gardener

TED_Talks_Roanoke_2015-06-24

This Wednesday at noon, join us for weekly TED Talks at 16 West!

Forest Gardening involves mimicking the forest to grow ecosystems for productive and ecological goals. Dan, the Forest Gardener, explains how we can do this is our own backyards and communities/urban environments.

Bonus Talk:

Since 2010, Tim and his wife have gone from a measly little tomato patch to six tenths of an acre (the equivalent of roughly 65 yards of a football field). They have planted over 50 fruit and nut trees and two dozen berry beds, set up two chicken coops and two beehives, and now have 20 neighbors actively participating in what they call their hamlet. They are growing food in the “Hawley Hamlet.” But equally important, they’re growing community. And that’s a good thing. Because given the risks climate change and extreme weather are posing to our environment, we’re going to need all the food and community the city can produce.

June 17th TED Talk – What the people of the Amazon know that you don’t

TED_Talks_Roanoke_2015-06-17

This Wednesday at noon, join us for weekly TED Talks at 16 West!

“The greatest and most endangered species in the Amazon rainforest is not the jaguar or the harpy eagle,” says Mark Plotkin, “It’s the isolated and uncontacted tribes.” In an energetic and sobering talk, the ethnobotanist brings us into the world of the forest’s indigenous tribes and the incredible medicinal plants that their shamans use to heal. He outlines the challenges and perils that are endangering them — and their wisdom — and urges us to protect this irreplaceable repository of knowledge.

TED_Talks_Roanoke_2015-06-10

Cost: FREE!

This Wednesday at noon, join us for weekly TED Talks at 16 West!

In the United States, two institutions guide teenagers on the journey to adulthood: college and prison. Sociologist Alice Goffman spent six years in a troubled Philadelphia neighborhood and saw first-hand how teenagers of African-American and Latino backgrounds are funneled down the path to prison — sometimes starting with relatively minor infractions. In an impassioned talk she asks, “Why are we offering only handcuffs and jail time?”

An architect of the “Boston miracle,” Rev. Jeffrey Brown started out as a bewildered young pastor watching his Boston neighborhood fall apart around him, as drugs and gang violence took hold of the kids on the streets. The first step to recovery: Listen to those kids, don’t just preach to them, and help them reduce violence in their own neighborhoods. It’s a powerful talk about listening to make change.

This Wednesday at noon, join us for weekly TED Talks at 16 West!

There’s an astronaut saying: In space, “there is no problem so bad that you can’t make it worse.” So how do you deal with the complexity, the sheer pressure, of dealing with dangerous and scary situations? Retired colonel Chris Hadfield paints a vivid portrait of how to be prepared for the worst in space (and life) — and it starts with walking into a spider’s web. Watch for a special space-y performance.
